His enormous eye surveys the landscape, breathing slowly as I watch him take in the rocky field stretching to the distant horizon.

 

 

They came before us, and they had the advantage. His eye has no lid.  

 

 

"You will have to return", he says. "You have been with them since the beginning."

 

 

That sounds final to me.

 

 

As I fade back between there and nowhere, shapes shift into familiar patterns.
