everybody keeps saying “jake, go to vietnam. the girls there are hotter. easier. better. and better food. stuff, other stuff.”
i get huffy about the process of travel. six hour friggin bus ride. getting off the bus, total stranger land again. i’ve got to be in that kind of mood, finding guest houses, figuring out the ways of the land. all the stories of foreigners getting shafted on prices for everything, also not that exciting. in phnom penh i’ve got a nice apartment, motorbike, friends, coffee shops, and plenty of places i haven’t seen yet.
but, one must get out and wander.
the other day, we run into an expat girl who needs to move out of her place in a few days. she’s lazy, hasn’t figured out her next move. on a whim, made her a deal: take my place for a month, pay the rent, and i’ll get out of town.
let fate decide. making myself homeless, and that pays for visa, the bus ride there and back, and maybe a week or so of a guesthouse lodging. my budget isn’t all that tight, but finding ways to save some of the well earned bits, always a major bonus. living expenses there being not much different from cambodia, the trip is basically entirely without extra cost. so today, an sms arrives:
“i’m in. life saver. a month is perfect!”
so there we have it. apartment is rented for a month, somebody will be around to water my plants and keep an eye on stuffs, and i’ll have to get my ass to somewhere else. out of the million ways to have your surroundings become part of your decision making, and also maximize the mileage of your cash flow, this is pretty sweet.
off to get visa done tomorrow, buy bus ticket, gtfo. new bits, kittehs. pictures, stories, whatnots.

Enjoying some exotic cuisine there? Hope its not made out of rat meat, or dog.
Dog’s supposed to be super tasty.
When I was stationed in Korea I had my Korean friends take me out for dog. It’s a red meat, stringy like roast beef. But, it was presented raw with a bowl of boiling broth. Pick up bit of meat with sticks and dunk it in the broth. So, not really cooked. I couldn’t get past the raw part. But, since I was in Korea, I had to try it.
Ugh. Raw dog in boiling water. Sounds like the holodomor.
Jake takes on soft communism. I hear ‘Nam is the Scandinavia of Asia. Most interesting.
I was half hoping you’d take a look at Burma, but I’m sure you’re saving that for later.
Dated a Burmese girl for a couple of weeks. Watched Burma political documentaries, talked about her country … made me feel in no rush to go.
Get a motorbike (Or the closest approximation) and travel the length of the country, camp where you end up. More to life than girls.
Got a bike in Thailand, vague plan to do that. Same in Cambodia. So far haven’t ended up doing it. Maybe Vietnam ….
Jake, in your personal opinion, what makes a man handsome?
Looking forward to the review. Have you looked into getting a non-US passport in any of these places?
